“On Monday 10th June, Year 8 Cheam students arrived at Park House Stables in Kingsclere owned by the Balding family. We arrived and went into the amazing Colour Room which had loads of famous silks, belonging to owners of racehorses. Here, we learned about the race horses and when they get trained, raced, fed, which food they eat etc. Archie demonstrated his jockey-skills on the equisizer, which is a practice horse for jockeys; he was go good Anna Lisa offered him a job!

After the Colour Room, we went to the Colts Yard where we learned about the junior horses’ juvenile behaviour. We learned about their shoes. Walking through the yard, we also learned about the horses’ strict training schedule. Like us, they get their Sundays off!

The tour ended back in the Colour Room where we learned about Mill Reef who was the first horse who survived a broken leg as he was operated on by a famous surgeon from Canada, with the bill costing just under £30,000, which is equivalent to half a million pounds in today’s money!

We are very grateful to have had the privilege of seeing such an awesome stable yard – thank you Anna Lisa and Andrew!” – Mrs Faulkner & Year 8s
