It is not every day that you get to put an Olympic gold medal around your neck and feel the weight of the enormous achievement that it represents. Cheam pupils in Years 6-8 were enthralled by Eilidh McIntyre’s words of wisdom and her kindness as she passed around her medal from Tokyo 2020/21.

Mrs McIntyre, with her sailing partner, won gold in the 470 class after several long years of striving for that elusive chance and after winning many other prestigious events, including the World Championships in 2017. After this talk, few pupils can be under the illusion that talent trumps hard work and a relentless dedication to one’s discipline. It was also clear that collaboration and having the right team around you is the only way to succeed.

Pupils were allowed the chance to ask questions, and it was pleasing to hear that they had listened, and the questions were so specific. It turns out there are quite a few sailors amongst our pupil body and they were so eager to share their experiences with Eilidh, as well as pose for a photo with her. We are extremely appreciative of Mrs McIntyre’s time and inspirational presentation.
