The Concerto Concert is a unique opportunity for Cheam’s most dedicated musicians to perform with an orchestra. The 2025 edition is the 23rd year the event has been run, but every time it produces something new and exciting.

It was a daunting task for the ten soloists, none of whom had played with an orchestra before but they all rose to the task and performed with skill and musicality. The audience was treated to performances on bassoon, flute, violin, cello and trumpet as well as for the first time a euphonium and a timpani solo. We were also treated to two strong, brave performances of major musical numbers by Cheam’s head choristers. A big well done to Caspian, Thomas, Vincent, Wilf, William, Louis, Felix, Catherine, Lucas and Izzy who will hopefully have lasting memories of this wonderful event.

But it was not only about the soloists. Cheam’s senior choirs, Year 7 Choir and Chapel Choir, performed moving renditions of ‘The Call of Wisdom’ and ‘The Ground’. The Chapel Choir was also joined by Cheam’s Community Choir, who are made up of parents. The Year 8 Pop Band gave an energetic performance of ‘Viva la Vida’ by Coldplay. These groups were brilliantly enhanced by the addition of strings from the orchestra.

A big thanks goes to all the music teachers involved in preparing their students so well for this event. A lot of time and effort also went into preparing the orchestral parts to help complement the soloists so well. The orchestra, largely made up of current and previous teachers plus distinguished guests, played with sensitivity and exceptional skill.

Well done to all those involved. There were many younger pupils in the audience who watched patiently and looked inspired by the seniors of the school. We look forward to finding out who will be ready to perform in the 2026 Concerto Concert.
