The Year 8 students have been engaging with Romeo and Juliet as part of their English Literature studies. While some of them have found the Shakespearean language quite challenging, most have really enjoyed the story and how the language illuminates the Elizabethan context. They have been amazed at the fashions, lifestyle and norms suggested in the text – most were horrified at the suggestion Juliet was not quite fourteen years old! Not only have we been reading the actual text, but we have had a look at modern dramatic staging and even looked at a few snippets from film adaptations for creative comparison.
Students were asked to pair up to role-play the famous balcony scene. We went off to the Windsor Stairs to affect a sense of space and drama – and had some fun while learning!
