Salvete! On Thursday, Year 6 travelled back in time to the 4th century AD, to step into the caligula of schoolchildren in Roman Egypt. The Classics department at the University of Reading, in conjunction with undergraduates from Oxford University, led the pupils through a series of exercises, directly taken from archaeological and textual evidence, writing on ostraca and wax tablets, reading and enacting Latin dialogues, and learning ancient mathematics using Roman counting boards and beans! The costumes were amazing, and both magistri and discipuli got enthusiastically involved. A fantastic window into Antiquity, and a new perspective for Latin learning!
