On Monday, Year 7 travelled to Stratford to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The aim of the day was to find out about sustainable development and whether the London 2012 Olympic Games had left a Green legacy. The groups started by walking through to the river and the Aquatics Centre. Here they discussed the materials and the energy which were used to make it. The Year 7s were especially interested to learn about the ‘green wall’ which increases biodiversity and also reduces pollution. They then undertook some surveys of people in the area to learn more about how people use transport there. They also asked some residents of the East Village some questionnaires to understand how it remains a sustainable area in terms of transport, recycling and use of open space. A real highlight of the day was eating lunch inside the velodrome (although unfortunately no one was cycling whilst we were there). The toilets in the velodrome used rainwater harvesting which was another interesting sustainability ‘fun fact’. Overall, it was a really interesting and inspiring day and we were all grateful that the sun stayed out for most of it!
