At Cheam we have always valued The Queen’s close association with the School, as a parent and as our Monarch. King Charles was a pupil at Cheam from 1957 to 1962. After finishing his prep school days at Cheam, he then moved to Gordonstoun, Scotland. It was while he was a pupil at Cheam that the Queen proclaimed him The Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester, at just nine years old. The School has been delighted to be invited frequently to The Queen’s Garden Parties and over the years a number of teachers and staff have been honoured to meet her on these special occasions.Cheam has also had a close connection with the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who was the Patron of the Cheam School Association. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh attended Cheam from 1930 to 1933. Over the years The Prince visited Cheam on several occasions, the last to open the Duke of Edinburgh Building in 2013. Those who met him on these occasions speak of his great warmth, humour and interest in Cheam.On Friday both the Pre-Prep and the Prep School held services to pay their respects to The Queen, joining together to give thanks for her incredible life.A book of condolence has been opened for children, staff and families to sign. A signed photograph of The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh is available for families and visitors to see, and floral tributes are being left here.
