Orchestral Day at Wellington College On the morning of 3 October, two minibuses transported some very excited children, their musical instruments and a group of staff to a wonderful day of music-making at Wellington College.After being welcomed by the Director of Music, Simon Williamson, the children divided into like instrument groups and began to learn their respective parts for the three pieces of music to be performed at the end of the day: Finlandia, New World Symphony (fourth movement) and Star Wars.After an hour of hard work and a short break, it was time for all 112 pupils to come together to experience making music in a large orchestra under the expert baton of Adrian Lucas. During this session and subsequent rehearsals throughout the afternoon, the children enjoyed learning some useful practice techniques and fun coordination exercises.The greatly anticipated sausage and chips tea – and doughnuts! – awaited the children, after which there was just enough time to top and tail all three pieces once more before parents arrived for the concert.The day at Wellington was a fantastic way for pupils to continue to develop the musicianship skills of both leadership and teamwork that Mr. Bennett encourages at school – and it was also a wonderful opportunity to make new friends!
